Social rejection interpreted by the brain
Did you know that when a person suffers from social rejection in their brain, the same brain areas are activated as when they suffer from a physical ailment?
Yes, both factors, pain and rejection, cause similar damage to humans due to the activation of the same brain regions when they occur.
Research from universities such as Michigan, in the United States, refer, according to their results, that just like cutting a hand or suffering a fall, feeling socially rejected arouses similar sensations.
This occurs because the same brain areas are activated when going through one experience or another, leading to emotional discomfort. In fact, this has been proven by carrying out studies with people who have suffered a separation from a couple months before the investigation, who were also made to experience physical pain, after being shown photographs of their previous relationship or of any other person with whom they had broken up or had negative situations.
Scanning images of their brain activity showed that, really, feeling social rejection activates the same brain regions as physical pain.
