Did you know what psychosomatic disorders are?

Updated: Jul 16, 2022

Psychosomatic disorders are a condition that results in physical symptoms being aggravated by mental factors. The term "psychosomatic" refers to a physical disorder related to psychological factors considered to be the fundamental cause of the progression of the disorder. When saying that a person "somatizes", it is understood that he physically manifests the psychological discomfort he suffers. Therefore, somatization is the tendency to express emotions through physical symptoms, since the human body and brain communicate constantly, every second the brain emits countless instructions and signals to the body, and vice versa. For example, stress, anguish, anxiety and fear are acute emotional states that cause different bodily responses, from inflammatory processes to increased cortisol, skin conditions such as rashes, psoriasis, tics, allergies, tremors, tachycardias, migraines and even sexual disorders. Hypertension is another common example of somatization, where anxiety and stress increase blood pressure, which can seriously affect people with heart disease and diabetic patients. If these are sustained over time and are not managed properly, it will eventually be reflected through physical symptoms. So, since psychosomatic disorders involve physical symptoms that hide emotional distress, it is necessary to find their origin and reprogram the brain to learn to face circumstances without somatizing them. It may be difficult to reach a diagnosis when suffering from a psychosomatic disorder and this aggravates the situation. However, the help of a psychologist is essential to reduce or eliminate it. Currently psychosomatic illnesses are treated to improve the quality of life of those who suffer from them, helping to understand the root of physical discomfort and change what causes them. There are different types of psychotherapy for this, such as supportive psychotherapy, group and family therapies, cognitive-behavioral therapies, relaxation exercises, among others, although, without a doubt, prevention is the best option, indicating for this to manage emotions and stress properly, have a restful sleep, practice relaxation, surround yourself with positive relationships, perform physical activities, eat healthy and, in short, lead a healthy lifestyle in general.
